Welcome to Third Grade
Hello Third Graders and Family,
Welcome to third grade, I am so excited for a new year and to meet you all. We have lots of fun things happening in third grade this year. This will be our class blog and will be updated mostly by students and sometimes by me. It will include important events and information about what is happening in the classroom.
I am so excited for a great year!!

Below is an explanation about or nightly Homework Routine and Positive Behavior Plan.
Third
Grade Weekly Homework Routine
Monday- Math In My Life: Students will be given a
math task that relates to the current math topic we are studying and the
students’ lives. They may also be given a relatable story problem to solve
using words, pictures and numbers.
Tuesday- Text To Self Connections: Students will
be given a written response prompt that relates to the reading story or
informational text of the week. They
need to provide at least a one paragraph response. The paragraph needs to have a topic sentence
that essentially answers the prompt and at least two supporting detail
sentences.
Wednesday- Word Work: Students will be given a task
that relates to the week’s spelling OR vocabulary words.
Thursday- Thirty Or So Math Fluency Practice Problems:
Students will be given a set of problems to complete. The set of problems they complete will be
individualized to the level they are currently working to pass. Third grade students are expected to multiply
and divide through 100 as well as having mastered the previous year’s math
fluency goals.
Students will be bringing home a
journal each evening and it will need to be signed by a parent or guardian and
returned to school the next day. They
will have written any important information that their family needs to know, as
well as notes about what we are studying and the behavior level (see back of
this note for behavior level explanation) that they ended the day on. I may also write individual notes to parents
in take home journals.
Students will also be expected to
read AT LEAST 15 minutes each night.
This will be recorded on a half sheet reading log that will come home
each Monday in their take home journal.
This log needs to be turned in Friday morning. There are often surprise
rewards for the top readers in the class each month.
Third
Grade Positive Behavior Plan
Our classroom behavior plan is
focused on recognizing students who are making the right choices and having a
positive impact on their own learning and the classroom climate. We are committed to acknowledging students
who are making the right choices, before correcting poor choices. The majority of the time students quickly
adjust their behavior when they hear others being praised for making good
choices.
This behavior plan is managed using
a large pocket chart in the classroom. This chart is to help adults interacting
with the students recognize positive behaviors before focusing on negative
behaviors. As students are making
positive choices an adult will ask them to move up their card in the chart to
the next level. Many students will be
moved up before any would be moved down.
It is feasible, however, for a student to not move up the chart, due to
the schedule or activities for the day.
A student should be celebrated for anything at the “Ready To Learn”
level or above. Students who have been
moved down do have the opportunity to move back up the chart if there is a
positive shift in their behavior. I will also keep a record of their daily
level.
Each student starts the day on
“Ready To Learn” and they can move up or down from there. The level they ended the day on will be
recorded in their take home journals. They will fill in the following sentence
with their behavior level for the day:
Today in
class I was…
a role model.
a skillful learner.
extra focused.
ready to learn.
given a few extra
reminders.
given many reminders.
having a difficult
time staying on task and following directions.
